Reflections from 2019

Adrian Reynolds | 23 December 2019

2019 has been a very successful year for Duncan & Toplis and one that has seen us grow from strength to strength. This year has seen us become the 29th largest accountancy company in the UK, with another record turnover and we've welcomed more than 60 new members to our team.

Next year is set to be a big one for Duncan & Toplis as we celebrate our 95th anniversary, but this year saw a few other major milestones; 2019 marked 50 years of business in Skegness and the 30th anniversary of our Newark office, which was formerly part of a famous brewery and home to the brewmaster. To celebrate, we enlisted the help of Oldershaw Brewery to create our very own commemorative beer which went down a treat.

2019 also saw us continue our winning streak at the ICAEW East Midlands Awards. We were awarded 'Best Large Practice' for the second time, after winning 'Best Medium Practice' for three years previously. The ICAEW East Midlands Awards are one of the region's most prestigious awards for the accountancy profession and this year, the judges praised us for our commitment to client service and our work to support the community.

Additionally, we were awarded a number of accreditations throughout 2019, with the highlight being us becoming an Institute of Leadership Management (ILM) accredited training centre. This means that we're now able to provide management and leadership training to clients and external businesses in an enjoyable, relaxed and fun atmosphere.

We also became patrons of the East Midlands Chamber for the first time. Our patronage with the chamber has opened up a range of opportunities for us, from networking with fellow business leaders from across the region to international business support.

This year, we set out to improve the way we care for our clients and our people so we can help them thrive and overcome any challenges they face. To do this, we introduced a new service-led structure which makes the most of our award winning team and their unrivalled expertise.

We launched a new strategic vision which is centred on our clients; our primary goal is to be the firm that clients always choose to work with and where talented people belong. In order to achieve this, we've adopted new policies and practices related to our people, clients and operations with a renewed focus on areas including flexible working, community engagement and managing relationships.

As well as having a strong client focus we also pride ourselves on how we serve the community, and this year has seen us getting involved in a number of charity fundraisers. In August, our Newark office took part in a fundraiser for homelessness charity, Framework, with team member, Fernanda Corierra, braving the shave to raise an extraordinary £800 for the charity. Our offices around the country have also been involved in Breast Cancer Now's 'Wear it Pink' day as well as taking part in half marathons to raise money for charity. Additionally, our annual Christmas present appeal has collected around 100 new and unused toys and gifts for children who are supported by local social care units, and this year our offices around the country made the decision not to send Christmas cards but to donate items to local food banks instead.

2019 has been an excellent year, but our greatest achievement is in helping thousands of businesses across our area, and beyond, to become more successful and more profitable each year while supporting our local communities. Looking onwards to 2020 and our 95th year, Duncan & Toplis has a lot to look forward to.
